What Causes Those Black Streaks on Your Roof?

Those dark streaks running down so many Florida roofs are not dirt, soot, or normal wear. They are a type of blue-green algae called Gloeocapsa magma, and it feeds on the limestone filler used in many roofing shingles.

Florida gives this algae everything it needs to thrive: heat, humidity, and regular rain. Once it takes hold, spores spread easily from roof to roof, which is why entire neighborhoods often show the same streaking.

Why it is worth removing

Beyond the curb appeal, algae holds moisture against your roof and can degrade shingles over time. It also makes your roof absorb more heat, which can drive up cooling costs in our Florida summers.

How to get rid of it for good

Scrubbing or high-pressure washing only removes the surface stain and can damage the roof in the process. The lasting fix is a soft wash treatment that kills the algae at the root. Done correctly, it leaves the roof clean and slows down how quickly the growth comes back.

If your roof has started to streak, the sooner you treat it the better. We are happy to take a look and let you know exactly what your roof needs.
